Trump nationalises golf
‘The Donald’ is the new President of the United States and what a relief to get a golf course owner holding that exalted position. It can only be good for golf. I will be making personal contact to invite him to join the UK Golf Course Owners Association.

I had the dubious pleasure of playing the Golden Palm at Trump National at Doral, Florida last month and it was in immaculate condition. There is a new clubhouse since I was last there and the staff are very attentive. The Golden Palm is not as difficult as the PGA Tour venue the Blue Monster, but for your typical golfer it is more than hard enough.

As readers of this newsletter and my blog will know, I am a believer in easier courses that give everyone a chance. A well designed course can test the high handicapper as well as the scratch player, but what I found at several US courses was a lack of imagination as to how to test all levels. How do most Floridian courses finish? With a par 4 or 5 with a lake in front of the green – how imaginative! I’ve played a few island greens, although none as difficult as Horton Park’s 10th, but I want to be entertained, see something different. I’d be keen to hear of your experiences at other courses.

Our membership continues to grow on account of the great atmosphere we have at the Club, our great course and of course you the members. Our prices are very competitive so talk to your friends and bring them along to our membership open day on Saturday 25 March. There will be the usual incentives to get them to join up, so have a chat to Matt & Will in the Shop.

We’ve got an extensive improvement plan for the club, more details of which will be in the next newsletter, but will include a major refurbishment to the range, with responsive targets the like of which you have never seen before! There will also be a full refurbishment of the locker rooms, bar and a new conservatory.

Watch this space and enjoy your golf.

Golf Express & Family Fun Day

Speed of play is a big issue in golf and we are planning some new initiatives come April to promote quicker rounds. Anyone playing before 8:00 am will be expected to play in sub 3 ½ hours. If you cannot you are asked to call groups through. Thereafter 4 hours will be the standard round time.

We are also planning a Golf Express event for May, where we will have one day devoted to 9 hole golf. Either nines of the Millennium will need to be played in 90 minutes or 60 minutes on the Academy Course. I hope you’ll join in these initiatives to help make the game more enjoyable for everyone and have some fun into the bargain.

We also have our Annual Family Fun Day coming up on Saturday 8 April, so make a note in your diary to bring your families along. It will be a great day of Adventure Golf, we have a footgolf free-styler coming as well as a magician and a steel band. Do join us and make a day of it, it’s always a very popular event.

The Kids Golf Store
The evolution of our golf shop into the biggest and best kids golf stockist in the area is continuing… we have the entire US Kids Golf range of clubs available, and they’re always in stock! Under Armour is the hottest clothing brand out there these days and we’ve just taken delivery of their whole spring kids range. Your budding little McIlroy or Speith with love it!

Trackman Long Drive Challenge

How long are you?

Come down to the driving range and test yourself driving against others, for free! This is a fun event for all standards, with the next one being held on Thursday 23rd February from 6:30-7:30pm. If you don’t think long driving is your forte then you can come down anyway and one of the pro’s will give you some tips on how to hit your shots further, what more can you ask for! Soon To Be Green Things

With Spring just around the corner we will soon be dusting the mowers off and gearing up for the new season. The team have been very busy this winter and have nearly finished all the Winter projects. In fact, we have just finished all our tree work ready for the new season.

Mother Nature has been a little kinder to Horton this winter with the course entering spring in much better condition than last year. The courses will benefit further from some much-needed aeration to greens, tees and aprons which will be carried out during February and March. So fingers crossed for a dry, warm and early Spring leading into a Sizzling Summer.

Best wishes to you all

Simon and the team that keep all things green
